SilverSilk is a Made in the USA product! Our knits are all manufactured at our warehouse in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. For nine years, John Lefgren and the Lefgren Corporation have worked to develop innovative new methods of forming stitches with fine wires made from Argentium silver and enameled copper wire. The wire we use to knit is nearly as thin as a human hair. There are many mechanical challenges Lefgren Corporation has overcome to develop SilverSilk. First, one must make a stitch without breaking the wire. Second, the fine stitches in SilverSilk require strength. Both 99.9% pure copper as well as Argentium Sterling Silver produce the tensile strength which is necessary to knit such thin wire. The knitted structure of our wires are strong, supple and free flowing adding to the feel and beauty of the designs. In addition to these mechanical benefits, both the Argentium Sterling Silver and permanently enameled non tarnish copper wire give SilverSilk a long lasting beautiful finish.
The Lefgren Corporation has been in business since 1985. For its first ten years, the company was involved in the buying and selling of specialty metals. They became an importer of several metals from Russia including Germanium. Since Germanium is a key ingredient in Argentium Silver, it was not long before Lefgren became involved as a supplier of Germanium to a large jewelry company in Scandinavia which was working with Peter Johns, the inventor of Argentium. In 1998 Lefgren got a fifty percent interest in the distribution rights for Argentium in North America. The company then became a promoter of Argentium as a new silver alloy for the jewelry industry. These efforts included the introduction of the alloy to America's largest jewelry distributor of precious metals. During these years Lefgren became familiar with the mechanical properties of Argentium and was particularly interested in the precipitation hardening of the alloy.
